Help Support the Future of Farming and Ecology in Ukraine
Ukraine Environmental Action, a 501C3 non-profit created by Jerry Coe, is a proud supporter of
Ukraine’s flagship ecological research station, Hlyboki Balyky, located 60 miles south of Kviv.
This ecostation provides key programs to regenerate biodiversity, drive ecological research,
educate farmers on best practices, and train upcoming farmers, researchers, blacksmiths, and
weavers. Originally, the ecostation was created to restore and reintroduce endemic Ukraine species of
plants, animals, birds, and insects lost during the years of destructive Soviet cooperative farms. That
work was stopped when Russia invaded Ukraine.
Ukrainian ecologist Bogdan Popov heads the research station with a lean team of professionals.
He directs several critical research and educational programs that benefit not only Ukrainian
researchers but also the international community. The ecostation’s farm activities play a central
role in both educational programs and land regeneration. In addition, the ecostation is teaching
local people to collect and store rainwater and construct composting toilets in areas where the
infrastructure has been destroyed by war.
What is the Ecostation Like?
Today at Hlyboki Balyky, visitors and volunteers can learn more about ecology in both English
and Ukrainian. Located south of Kyiv and on the edge of the Dnipro River, the ecostation is
centrally located and offers deep insight into the natural world.
